Would we be completely horrified to know what is lurking on their surfaces? Cleaning your devices especially the ones that you touch often on a regular basis is not only a good idea for the health of you and your family, but also for the gadget itself. Here are some tips and housekeeping supplies to make sure that you do this the right way.

First, make sure your device is turned off and unplugged when cleaning electronics. Never start spraying directly at the device and never use strong solvents like window cleaner, bleach or ammonia. There are plenty of products that are specifically designed to clean electronics with a price tag to match.

Rubbing alcohol works really well on everything like TVs, laptops, keyboards, cellphones and remotes. Just pour some into the spray bottle and dilute with 50% water and then slightly spray some on microfiber or lint-free cloth. Don’t saturate it. Just use enough to effectively wipe the area. Another good thing to have around is a computer keyboard gel cleaner. It is really good at cleaning little dirt of your keyboard.

Dusty cooling fans can slow down your device and make it more likely to overheat. Dryer sheets are actually a really good option for cleaning them out and getting your devices to run right. It is your least expensive option. If your vent gets dusty and dirty, you may be tempted to use a vacuum cleaner to really get in there. It is a bad idea to do so. A good way to prevent dust –built-up is to cover up. Shop shields are not so pretty but very practical covers during use. Keyboard covers can make your keyboard spill-proof and dust-proof.

How often should you clean your devices? It depends on the frequency of use. I usually recommend about once a month. Of course everything that is near my face, like a phone or headset, I wipe out a lot more frequently for obvious reasons. And if you’re in a place where you can’t keep your rubbing alcohol handy like in your handbag or in your car, a package of electronic-safe multi-surface wipe is great thing to have to keep you germ-free. Speaking of germ-free, I will finally tell you that the hotel remote is actually known as the dirtiest device around. So make sure you arm yourself with those wipes when you go on a trip.
